Improving road safety, reducing congestion, and planning for future growth remain top priorities across Beaufort and Jasper counties. Here’s an update on the infrastructure projects we’ve advanced—and what’s coming next.
I-95 Corridor: Progress Begins
The top road priority for both counties is repaving and widening I-95 to three lanes in each direction, from the SC/GA border to Exit 8. This project is fully funded, with engineering, permitting, and land acquisition complete. Construction is set to begin next year.
I’m also working with the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) to extend improvements northward toward the Walterboro exits, ensuring continued momentum along this critical artery.
Hilton Head Island: Getting the Hwy. 278 Bridge Right
Securing the right plan for the Highway 278 bridge corridor is essential for the future of Hilton Head. My role is twofold:
To secure funding for the project, and
To ensure the Town of Hilton Head Island has the time and support it needs to shape a final design residents can be proud of.
Progress has been made, but there’s more work ahead. To date, $300 million of the estimated $480 million project cost is secured, and about 30% of the project has been engineered.
Bluffton Growth: Key Corridors in Focus
In the greater Bluffton area, plans are moving forward to improve traffic flow at several key intersections and roadways:
Widening and repaving US 278 from I-95 to SC 170
Redesigning and signalizing the area known as “The Triangle”: SC 170, Argent Blvd, and US 278
Improving intersections at US 278 & SC 170 and SC 170 & SC 462
Upgrading SC 315
Some projects already have funding, while I continue working with developers and government partners to finalize resources for the rest.
Sun City Hilton Head: Safer Access, Smarter Signals
Sun City residents have long asked for better traffic flow at community entrances. A top priority is installing a signal at Del Webb Blvd and SC 170, which will help ease congestion at the overused Bull Hill gate.
A comprehensive signalization plan for southern Beaufort County—Sun City included—has been adopted and is being implemented over the coming months. I’m staying actively engaged to ensure progress is on track.
This is not an exhaustive list of all active local road projects, but it offers a snapshot of the priorities that matter most. Thanks to a strong legislative delegation and effective partnerships, we’ve been successful in securing state and federal infrastructure dollars—and we’ll keep pushing for progress.
